In Sarasota, you can walk for miles along sparkling beaches, running your toes through super-fine, white sand while enjoying the warmth and sunshine Florida's southwest coast offers. Along the beaches, you may notice marked and protected sea turtle nests, river otters, foxes, or deer. Birds such as herons, egrets, and ibis are also common in the saltwater bays.

Kayaking is a popular sport in Sarasota and for good reason. Go back in time as you paddle quietly through Sarasota's exotic mangrove tunnels. Weave your way through tangled red roots that fall from trees twenty feet above you; enjoy the shade and, in the spring, a canopy of yellow flowers. As you traverse your way through this thick root system, you'll see crabs eating mangrove leaves and fish darting amongst the maze of roots that continues beneath the surface of the water. The Red Mangroves, nicknamed "walking trees" have given many people memorable pre-historic experiences.

In the bays and rivers, it is likely you will see a Florida Manatee, whose ancestor's remains date back 45 million years. Also called sea cows, manatees are usually snoozing or grazing in water 3 to 8 feet deep. Reaching up to 1200 pounds and 12 feet in length, manatees are usually solitary creatures unless a mother is with her calf. Kayakers have reported getting very close to these peaceful giants. Imagine seeing a mother manatee swim lazily by with her baby, close enough to touch from your kayak!

Sarasota offers a wide range of community centers including the Venice Community Center which is a first class, 45,000 sq. ft. regional facility that serves the needs of residents and visitors in Sarasota County and surrounding areas. Its ballroom can seat up to 1000 guests.

Sarasota also offers dance studios, aquatic centers, courts, playgrounds, sports complexes, walking and cycling trails, multi-use parks, a number of pet-friendly areas, a state-of-the-art rowing facility, and Florida's only natural formed warm water mineral spring. Warm Mineral Springs is one the most important underwater archaeological sites in America due to the fact that artifacts of prehistoric hunters have been found in the depths of the spring.

Day or night, you will never be bored in Sarasota. Residents can participate in a variety of activities and programs such as sewing, bridge, aerobics, family fun nights, and a rich and varied arts scene. Strolling through historic neighborhoods, you will appreciate the colorful old-Florida houses of downtown Sarasota's historic Towles Court art district. At night, areas of independent shops, restaurants and bars make for easy and exciting nighttime destinations.

Whatever you choose to do, you're sure to have a great time enjoying the wide variety of locations and activities that Sarasota, FL has to offer. It is truly a wonderful place for people of all ages to live.
