You were probably given this golden piece of advice (or something similar) by your high school guidance counselor or some other well-meaning person in your life. Okay, we all have potential, but we don’t know exactly how much or what kind. How exactly we do we achieve that potential? And once you’ve reached your potential, how do you know it’s happened? Is there an instrument that lights up somewhere when you’ve reached full potential like the gas gauge on your car? Sadly, no.

“You have a lot of potential. You can realize it if you work hard.”
Sadly, no.
Reaching full potential isn’t like making the jump to light speed or following the directions on your GPS. It’s not a destination to be reached, but rather a daily mindset to be mastered. You may not be able to create a chart that tracks your potential or buy a “potential detector” so you know exactly when you reach your “full potential,” but there are things you can do to help you to become a more successful person in both life and business.
1. Help other people. One of the best things you can do to reach your fullest potential is to help other people reach theirs. You help others, and in return, they want to help you. By helping others as much as possible, you create a network of support you can lean on.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. People often let the fear of rejection keep them from asking for what they want. It takes courage and humility to ask for help, but can be well worth the effort. By getting help from others, you gain the experience, resources, and expertise that you would not have had otherwise.
3. Work smart. Working smart means modeling other experienced people and doing your homework. Taking the time to do your homework and make a plan will help you get the most out of your time and effort.
4. Open your mind to new ideas and perspectives. Being closed minded can cause you to pass up opportunities because we are afraid to try something new or take a risk. Truly successful people aren’t afraid to step outside of the norm and try something new. This may mean getting a little negative feedback from those around you, but remember people like Leonardo Di Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were considered radical thinkers at one time. Now they’re considered geniuses.
