If you thought that web marketing was only for multinational corporations, think again. The internet is evolving in many ways to make life easier for the common man. The power of media is now, in the hands of the people. And you could use it to promote pretty much anything, even yourself!
Online careers first found its way into common man's life through executive job search engines. There were a multitude of options available. But you were only in contact with an intermediary and the only reason to post your resume on a job portal was to get a job.
LinkedIn Uncovered The Unmet Need:
A large number of professionals wanted to network with people from similar industries. The reason was not only to go job hunting but also to get genuine career advice from someone who was, currently in the situation they desired to be in. Also many students wanted to zero in on their career from the options they had. What better way than to ask someone who was in the same job?
The Magic Word: Networking
LinkedIn noticed the power of networking. Let's assume that A wants to meet C. A is on good terms with B, and B is a good friend of C from high school. Poor A keeps wondering and wishing; unaware of the fact that B could come to his or her rescue. So A is forced to pay the price for lack of networking. In other words, if we are on good terms with 50 people and each of the 50 are friends with 50 different people; we will have a network of 2500 people from all walks of life and industries.
Unleashing The Power:
LinkedIn helps to use this power to optimize your job search. LinkedIn allows you to look up various levels of your network. So, when you conduct a search for a person with legitimate authority in a company. Let's say hiring manager at Google in Silicon Valley, CA. It will retrieve:
First Level Network: People you directly know. Maybe your buddy from business school just got hired as a hiring manager in Google.
Second Level Network: Maybe your buddy from business school had a buddy from high school, whom Google hired as hiring manager. In this case you could ask your buddy to introduce you. Since you came from a known source, the hiring manager might give you a better hearing or will, genuinely, tell you what you need to build upon to get the job! He or she could be your best qualified career guide.
Third Level Network: This is the buddy's buddy's buddy. You would need a double introduction here. But you still come from a known source.
Moreover, as and when you add more people, your network increases by a large number. A person with 300 connections, which is pretty common on LinkedIn, is connected to at least 10000 people.
Also, there is an option for recommendations. You could even make your personal website and post your link there. If any recruiter gets interested, he/she could find more information about you.
The possibilities are endless. You will be shocked to know how many people are harnessing the power of LinkedIn to land into the most coveted jobs!
