Linen fabric and linen curtains have always been popular, but you may be wondering how difficult are they to take care of? For such a beautiful fabric they are surprisingly easy to care for. Linen is made from the flax plant and has been used for clothing and other cloths for over 8,000 years. In fact, it was the go to fabric of the Egyptians. If they could take care of it without all of the modern conveniences we have today you should be able to care for yours with no problems at all.
As with all fabrics and clothing you should carefully read and follow all of the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and care. Many people think that the only way to clean linen especially linen curtains is to dry clean it, but this is simply not true. In fact, linen materials look and clean better when they are hand or machine washed. Linen actually becomes more absorbent and softer with each washing.
When laundering your linen clothing or curtains whether you choose to machine wash them or hand wash them you will need to use a mild detergent that is diluted with either cold or lukewarm water. If you are washing your linen fabrics in the washing machine the gentle cycle will be your best choice. Linen will launder better with soft water than it does with hard water. You may want to add an extra rinse cycle to ensure that soapy residue is removed from the fabric.
To remove stains from linen curtains or clothing as with all stain removal the quicker you act the better your results will be. If you leave the stain too long you may not be able to remove it at all or some evidence of the stain may remain. For white linen fabrics oxygen bleaches can be used for some varieties of the fabric, but chlorine bleaches should be completely avoided.
Now that your linens have been washed what's the best way to get them dry? Linen can be placed in a dryer, hung on a line or laid flat to dry. If you are using a dryer you will want to place it on the delicate or gentle cycle so the temperature is a little cooler than some of the other settings. Having the linen in direct sunlight for at least part of the drying time is recommended to kill any bacteria and because it makes your linens smell good. Linen fabrics do not have to be ironed but if you choose to it is best to do it when the fabric is still slightly damp. White and light colored linens can be ironed on both sides, but darkly colored linens should only be ironed on the wrong side (the side that is not facing out to be seen).
As you can see linen fabrics make gorgeous curtains and beautiful clothes that will stand the test of time and are very easy to care for. Linen fabrics will not take you any more time to care for than the other fabrics in your home and closet, and they offer a beauty and elegance that can't be found in any other material.
