What do you understand by the term linear equation? Linear equation is an equation between two different variables which forms a straight line when plotted on a graph. Linear equation is always in the form of “ y = mx+ c ” where, “ m ” is the slope of line, “x” and “y” are the coordinates of the points that satisfy the function and “c” is the “y intercept ” of the line. A linear equation with n unknowns like x1, x2, x3, x4.... , xn = b is an equation of the form “a1 x1+ a2 x2+......+ an xn = c” here, a1, a2 and so on are the real numbers and b is also a real number.

Do you know there are various methods of solving linear equations like substitution method, graphical method, elimination method and so on. In this article, I will explain you how to solve linear equations by using graph method. In this small article, I can't show you how to graph linear equations but I will explain all the important points that you need to remember while plotting a graph from linear equation. First of all, draw a pair of perpendicular lines. Here, the horizontal axis is known as “x” axis and the vertical axis is known as “y axis”. Always remember that your equation is always in form of y = mx + c, if you found it in some different form then first of all solve it for y in terms of “x”. For y = b, plot dot on the y axis. This is known as y- intercept of the graph. After this, choose a non- zero value for x and plot it on x- axis. Then, put the value of x in the equation, calculate it for the value of y. Then, draw a line that crosses x axis and other line that crosses y axis. Mark a point where two lines intersect and draw a straight line. The resultant line is the graph of the linear equation.

Another important equation is quadratic equation. It is defined as the second order polynomial equation. Do you know how to solve quadratic equations? There are several methods of solving quadratic equations like factoring, completing the square, factor by grouping and one important method i.e. quadratic equation formula.
