Bathroom basins can be made of a large variety of materials, such as stainless steel, ceramic, plastic, glass, concrete or copper. But, since the rise of ecological awareness, there has been a search for the revival and use of raw materials, as a statement of a reconnection with nature, in home construction and décor. Limestone is one of those materials and is now being used in the the designer bath market for it's durability, low maintenance and organic aesthetic appeal.

Life in stone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock that has been widely used, throughout history, mainly in constructions, ranging from the pyramids of Egypt to medieval European castles and churches, and modern day building façades. It was particularly popular throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's and is now making a comeback to enrich our home interiors with the luxurious qualities it possesses.

Today, limestone has attracted designers as an ideal material for bathroom basins. As a contemporary approach, rather than making sinks directly out of a one-piece stone, the limestone undergoes a grinding and pulverising process, and is then refined, to free it from impurities and other materials, such as minerals or other organic residues, that are considered "contaminants". After this, the powder is mixed with a resin, which not only binds it and gives it consistency, but which will also act as a sealing agent that will make it impermeable. This mixture is then poured into a mould and baked in an oven, to achieve hardness. The end product is a beautiful, polished structure that looks very much like fine porcelain, but with the strength, impenetrability and long-life lasting qualities of stone.

Furthermore, limestone's cleansing and preserving process, does not require the use of harsh chemicals or common corrosive and environmentally unfriendly household cleaners. Merely soap and water is enough to do the trick, as acidic agents can seriously tarnish and damage the stone. Thus, this apparent "flaw" only adds to the beneficial qualities of limestone as a sustainable, eco-friendly material.

Organic display

Many of the latest bathroom designs are retrieving the organic feel and ancient use of stone, blending it into modern spaces and shaping it into minimalistic, rounded, sleek concave forms:

• Oval
• Circular
• Square
• Rectangular
• Triangular

The lines move smoothly and curvaceously, avoiding sharp crisp edges, harmonising with the fluidity of water and inviting our senses to serenity and oneness with nature. The forms and texture remind us of a pebble that has been lustred within the continuous friction of a river.

These current trendy bathroom basins are designed as large bowls that sit on top of counters. Designer bath layouts are reminiscent of Roman washbowls, clashing upon modern dark surfaces. Organic and industrial, coexisting in one same space.

Reduce environmental impact. Make your home part of the contribution towards the world's preservation. Bring awareness into your space and admire the beauty and simplicity of nature, with a touch of luxury and refinement.
