Usually, male sexual problems are most widely discussed and talked about in comparison to female sexual dysfunction. Female sexuality is not easy to define and restore as it is influenced by multiple factors ranging from physical, psychological, to social aspects.
Female libido: An inside story
Ageing is one of the factors that can cause loss of sexual desire in women due to hormonal imbalance. This can take a toll on the sexual relationship they share with their partners. Most experts reveal that reduced frequency of sexual activity can be one of the biggest reasons behind relationship problems. The issues related to female tightening can also cause reduced sexual pleasure for both men and women. On the contrary, relationship or psychological problems can also lead to loss of sex drive in women.
Majority of women experience loss of sexual desire, as they get old. Diminished sexual arousal, painful penetrative sex, and problems reaching orgasm are some of the common symptoms of female sexual dysfunction. Sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) orchestrate both male and female sexual functions. In women, the levels of these hormones fluctuate every month due to menstrual cycle. But as the menstrual period ends, they restore to their normal levels. Menopause is a stage in a woman’s life during which the ovaries cease to produce both oestrogen and progesterone. This sharp drop in the level of female sex hormones can cause onset of female sexual dysfunction symptoms. When a woman experiences diminished sexual desire, arousal, and problems reaching orgasm, the condition is known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder. In particular, after hysterectomy (removal of ovaries), there is a significant fall in the oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels. This hormonal imbalance leads to onset of menopause before its usual time. Surgery-induced menopause can cause drop in the testosterone levels by as much as 50%, which can eventually lead to female sexual dysfunction. Apart from menopausal effects that can cause physical and hormonal changes, the drop in female sexual desire can be often associated with certain psychological factors such as:
Depression
Reduced self-esteem
Social barriers leading to shame or guilt about sex
Past sexual experience
Fear of pregnancy
Ineffective or inadequate foreplay
Female sexual enhancement
The pelvic muscles play a crucial role in performing sexual activities in both men and women. But many factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, or excess weight can weaken these pelvic floor muscles. Sometimes, this may even lead to a condition where pelvic organs descend and bulge into the vagina. Kegel exercises and other effective methods can help in vaginal tightening, which eventually can let women post-pregnancy regain their sexual desire for enhanced orgasms. For performing Kegel exercises, you need to first identify the right pelvic muscle and then practice a series of contraction and relaxation exercises. You can expect effective results within about 8 to 12 weeks, if you perform these exercises religiously. A range of creams and gels can also help in toning and firming vaginal muscles to improve its sensitivity and elasticity.
