The light bulb in general has certainly come a long way, stemming from early day incandescent filament bulbs to florescent lighting. Nowadays, LED light bulbs are becoming increasingly popular as well, often due to their longevity and energy efficiency when compared to incandescent or compact florescent lighting.
LED stands for light emitting diodes and are often used for different types of lighting. They focus on a tiny wavelengths through means of a semiconductor which, in turn, brings forth extremely bright, colored lighting. The original form of LED lighting came about in the 1960's and only came in the color of red, which was frequently used in electrical components. Later on, other colors became available such a blue and green, as well as the technology for visible, ultraviolet and infrared lighting colors through the use of phosphor.

While some may consider them on the expensive side, they actually cost less than many florescent bulbs and have the average lifespan for LED bulbs can last about twenty years.
