Every year, millions of people travel to Israel to experience the Holy Land, and some travel there on business. Although there are several languages and dialects spoken here, the primary spoken language is Modern Hebrew, and many visitors elect to know something about Hebrew before their trip. One of the best ways to learn is to learn Hebrew online.
Tour guides in Israel will almost always speak the language of the tour groups involved, and English is one of those languages. Many hotel managers and staff are also multi-lingual. One can argue that learning Hebrew is unnecessary in this kind of environment. But if you are not part of a tour group and are travelling alone, or with just your family, or traveling on business, you may frequently come across locals with whom you are unable to communicate. So knowing something about the Hebrew language can be beneficial. Also, Israel is a high-tech country, and business travelers in high-tech industries would do well to learn something about the most commonly spoken language there in order to communicate better. Or at least, that is what some would say.
But there is a paradox here. The Israeli education system has been somewhat lax lately in its teaching of proper Hebrew in their schools. Travelers who learn Hebrew online may find themselves, depending on the situation, speaking better and more proper Hebrew than the natives they are trying to communicate with.
Should this deter travelers to the Holy Land from learning proper Hebrew even though they may be able to speak it better than the natives they are trying to communicate with?
Hardly. There is still plenty of the native population who knows how to speak their own language. So it’s worth the effort.
Is it really worth the effort to learn Hebrew online? Hebrew is one of the oldest spoken languages and is officially spoken in a part of the world that is rich in history, conflict, and religious significance to the three largest religions in the world – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This is the land of the Bible. This is where Jesus walked the earth and where Muhammad ascended to heaven. This is where the might of ancient Rome was challenged in Jerusalem and at Masada. This is the land of milk and honey where Moses led his people after escaping from the Egyptian Pharaoh’s army. This is the land of Samson and Delilah, King David, Solomon, and Herod the Great, of Sodom and Gomorrah, and of Jericho. This is a part of the world that is even richer in archaeological wonder than it is in modern amenities. To be able to communicate in a language that was so much a part of this ancient and significant culture would allow for a deeper understanding of that culture.
What’s the best way to learn Hebrew online? That depends, of course on personal preferences and on the style of learning that works the best for a particular individual. But for those about to travel to the Holy Land, learning Hebrew may be worth it in ways that perhaps cannot be expressed.
