Leak detection: A safety measure

We all know that pipelines are the most cost effective way to transport gas and sometimes certain fluid products for home and commercial consumption.

Pipeline transporting is the most innovative and optimized methods for long distance transporting of gases especially. It is very important to monitor the flow and leakages from these pipelines as it can be very depredating both fiscally and pernicious health wise. It is of primordial priority to avoid any sort of catastrophic incident. This is the reason organizations that use gas lines for their very working use certain Leak Detection System (LDS) which is a major and important aspect of security and safety.
What do the LDS do?
The reason LDS is used to detect leaks from the pipelines. These leaks can be in the form of fluids or gas. They are the safest way to protect the pipelines from leaking and keeping a strict check. Certain infrared radiometry is used to test the pipeline for leaks. There are two types of testing for leaks being internal and external tests. The internal check is maintained by designing the pipelines in such a way that a few sensors are placed inside the pipelines. These sensors check for irregularities and send a monitoring message back to the tracker which keeps an update on the condition of the pipelines.
There are external detectors too which are very much used these days as it is not always possible to use internal detectors. These detectors can be attached to conveyors. They can also detect very fast moving aerosol cans on the conveyors. They are used in manufacturing industries to detect leaks. This is very simple to use as they just require a 240V A.C supply. There is a great influence of hydraulics of the pipelines and therefore the pressure maintained before and after the leak is recorded and monitored. There are absolutely no chances of false alarms in such systems as the level of accuracy is point blank.
A few advantages of such external systems are:
• They can measure the gases and their levels rapidly and instantaneously.
• They have a very intricate detection limit. They can even detect the smallest of smallest changes.
• On a conveyor belt they can check close to about 500 cans at the same time.
• They just have an installation charge and not much has to maintenance required.
• They consume very little power and besides that absolutely nothing else.
• These systems are upgradeable by just changing a few sensors in the system. This is a very cost effective method of upgrading to new technology.
• They are extremely easy to install and any layman can operate on it without prior knowledge.
