The Phillips Spark isn't very impressive when it comes to features, but it has managed to cover most of the basic features. The music player that comes built into the Spark supports MP3 and WMA formats which also includes DRM-protected subscriptions and purchases. The music menu is sorted by Artist, Album, Genre, and Playlist, and also includes the capability to delete songs directly from the device or add them to playlists that can be created on-the-go.
The Spark's screen the best when compared to other devices in this price range. Song information which is displayed is pretty large and legible, the album artwork works as a full-screen background image, and song duration and position information are clearly displayed on the bottom third of the screen. By clicking the options button which has been placed on the top edge of the Spark, you will get a submenu which can be used for setting up song shuffle and repeat modes, adjusting EQ, also adding or removing a song from playlists, or deleting the song entirely.
FM radio reception on the Spark is just about average but it’s a good addition, and it comes with 20 memory-preset slots and an auto-program feature that works quickly. The Spark also comes with voice-recording feature which is not that impressive and songs are recorded in a low bit rate WAV format. It comes in 2 storage capacities, the 4gb priced at Rs. 3,499 and the 2gb model priced at Rs. 2,499 which is a pretty good deal considering what it has to offer in comparison to the iPod shuffle.
Sony W – Series Walkman
As it is usually expected, the W-Series Walkman's interface is more or less not the traditional kinds, although it rather easy to get music onto the device. All you need to do is drag-and-drop directly between folders using either Windows or Mac, and Sony has also included a nice little Content Transfer app which is available for Windows only for transferring music from jukeboxes such as iTunes and Windows Media Player. Not too much of a surprise that this Walkman is an audio-only device it can play back MP3, and unprotected AAC and WMA files.
The W-Series Walkman is very light on extra features which is very predictable, but Sony has integrate a few unique and useful features such as a new feature called Zappin, which lets you browse through tracks by ear by playing a snippet of the chorus of each song and If you come across a song you want to hear, a press of the jog button will play it from the beginning. It has a different kind of wearable design and it fits directly on the ear which is great for those taking their music to the gym or for those who like to jog.
The MP3 Player also offers a quick-charge feature that which can give you close to 90 minutes of playback from a very short 3-minute charge which is particularly handy for a fitness-friendly player. Its full battery life is only 11 hours which was slightly unimpressive that too at a price tag of Rs. 4999 for a 2 GB model.
