The town proper is home to around 500,000 residents. What makes Las Vegas so noteworthy, however, is that every year between 30,000,000 and 40,000,000 visitors make the trip to stay in one of the city’s 140,000 hotel rooms and play games of chance in the 122 licensed casinos. Visitors come to play on the 116,000 gaming machines or try their luck at one of over 4,300 gaming tables. The economy of Las Vegas, Nevada also receives a boost from hosting business meetings and conventions. Over 10,000,000 square feet of meeting space are available in the resorts and special venues. All up and down the famed “Strip” – the place for Las Vegas hotels in the middle of the action – the city offers elaborate and entertaining shows, lavish cuisine and a complete array of bars and taverns. Though the city does not officially endorse its nickname of “Sin City,” one official and very popular motto has been “What happens here stays here.” Las Vegas Nevada was not always a mecca for people seeking entertainment, gambling, food and drink. In the 19th century its wide valley was a remote oasis for watering herds and a resting place for pioneers just passing through. The town was established in May of 1905 as an overnight stop for the new San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. It officially became a city in 1911. The new city government even outlawed gambling. In the 1930’s, gambling became legal again, and construction on the Hoover Dam began. This revitalized the nearly defunct local economy. Once completed, the Dam and Lake Mead gave new impetus to tourism, and the town began to flourish. Casinos, many linked to organized crime figures like the famed Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, began to spring up downtown, and then slowly out on what was to become “the Strip.” When Howard Hughes came to Vegas in the 1960’s, corporate investment in hospitality took off, resulting ultimately in what Las Vegas hotels are today - the gigantic and luxurious mega-resorts that visitors, including some of the world’s largest. Hotel magnate Kirk Kerkorian purchased the famed Las Vegas hotel, the Flamingo, in 1968 and a year later, the International Hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton) opened its doors. The Mirage followed, and the MGM Grand, the Wynn, and eventually the Project CityCenter, which was the world’s largest tourist resort when it opened in 2009. Las Vegas Nevada has benefitted from its proximity to Los Angeles, California attracting some of the most widely known celebrities to perform. Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are all storied names associated intimately with the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas nights. The construction boom in Las Vegas suffered badly from the financial crises that began in 2007, causing many well-known landmarks to close their doors, and laying off tens of thousands of workers. Many Las Vegas hotels sit unfinished. Home foreclosures skyrocketed, and tourism dropped off sharply. The fortunes of Las Vegas mirror the generally slow economic recovery in the nation, and by 2011, the picture has improved; however, 2007 is still the high water mark for tourism and income in “Sin City.” Contrary to popular myth, prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas.
