There was a time when computer laptops were considered high ticket items reserved only to highly paid analysts and corporate executives. Desktop PCs were the standard office de rigueur appliance and homes had started getting them. But laptops were quite expensive. That was in the early 90s. By mid-to late 90s, business soon realized how much more productive their people with laptops are. They can be productive at home and on the road with them.

Encouraging Statistics

It’s interesting to note that computer laptops have outsold desktop PCs in the US since 2005. With a growth rate of around 18% annually worldwide, Laptops will soon overtake desktop PC sales growing at just 7%. At this rate, laptops are projected to account for half of all consumer PCs marketed and distributed worldwide by 2011. This year, they already account for 40% of all PC shipments, according to the research firm Gartner Group.
Increasing strides in computing power made more efficient per cubic inch of space as well as the drop in prices have cemented laptops in their march getting the most market shares both in homes and offices.

Executives are increasingly becoming mobile in their work. Laptops are now an essential productivity tool for most corporate employees who spend a nearly equal spread of time in the office, at home and on the road. Desktops are now reserved to the deskbound office worker like secretaries and clerks who have to be in the office all the time. That includes call center agents and back office accountants who can’t get the work done without being in an office environment for most of the 8 hour work shift.

Increasing Popularity of Laptops

Laptops didn’t get popular just as a faddish event. There are many factors that conspired to make the computing landscape of the last few years just right for laptops to thrive as they’ve never done before.

- Cost

Admittedly, laptops remain more expensive than desktop PCs for the same computing power. But the gap is no longer as yawning as before. At the start of the century, laptops commanded double the price of a desktop in the same computing class. Today, both desktop and laptop prices have come down and the differences of $300 to $500 between the two can already justify the mobility benefits of laptops.

- Power

While desktops still have the edge in computing power and storage, the gap has likewise narrowed, 200GB storage and 1GB RAM used to give desktop PCs the power advantage are now pretty much standard in laptops. For many uses, laptops can do just about everything that can be done on a desktop. The only exception that remains are power users in the animation and imaging shops that still require powerful servers for their work.

- Portability/Mobility

These features really won’t amount to much without the wireless data connectivity landscape that allows mobile laptop users to go online anywhere on earth and be in touch with the office or the home just by logging onto a Wi-Fi hotspot in malls, hotels, cafes and airports. GP
