About the Island
The island of Lanzarote has 90 000 inhabitants. It is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches. Natural vegetation is rare, since only palm trees and tamarisk grow there.
People live in small villages. They have houses with white onion-shaped chimneys and landscaped gardens with black volcanic soil. The villages are scattered around the island where it is possible to work the land. North island region rises rapidly and then suddenly drops into the steep cliffs towards the sea. Furthermore, three islands rise from that place: Isla Graciosa, Isla de Montana Clara and Alegranza.
West Coast of National Park Timanfaya is wild and rough. The most important tourist resorts are situated on the eastern island. Tourist resorts extend to the southern tip of island. There are a lot of sand beaches and bays.
Cities grow in the south of the island and around the resort of Puerto Del Carmen. Sometimes they are significantly too compact, but tourism has still not defiled the island, particularly when compared to Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Economy
Most people from the island still earn their living by agriculture and fishing. However, it is a remarkable achievement since there is not much rain. There is much more rain in the mountainous part of the island.
Lava ravaged the island life in the past; therefore it is not surprising that many gardens and fields look as if they are made of asphalt. On such basis, Malvasia vines grow. Furthermore, it has the same name as the wine destined for export. The islanders also grow onions, tomatoes, watermelons, potatoes, maize and tobacco. Fishing is of great importance to the economy of the island. The sea between Lanzarote and African coast is very rich in fish.
Volcano
Today the National Park Timanfaya area is a very popular area for tourists. However, in the 18 century, the eruption occurred in Montanas del Fuego (fire mountains), and it was disastrous for the Islanders. Almost a quarter of the soil was covered with 6 to 10 meters thick layer of lava. Many people had no other option but to leave the island. Volcanic rocks from this period are of all colors, shapes, textures and sizes. Craters are black, red and gray.
Tourist Attractions
Even this island is developing in the sense of tourism, there are plenty of things that you can do. Once you are at Lanzarote, you should visit its main city Teguise. There are many historic buildings and a colorful market as well. You can join a cycling group, ride a camel, visit the National park and enjoy the food which is prepared over dormant volcano.
There are over twelve beaches with bars and restaurants.
