Labial reduction surgery – or Labiaplasty as it’s commonly known – is a cosmetic procedure that involves reducing the length, or overall size, of the labia minora of the vagina. It’s normal for women to have varying sizes of labia minora (also known as the ‘inner lips’). But for some women the size of the labia presents a major problem, with the labia being so long that they lead to embarrassment, and/or sexual dissatisfaction. This may have come about because of damage during childbirth, or the woman may simply have been unlucky, with the condition existing since puberty.
Either way, it can be a condition that causes a woman real pain – both physical and psychological. It can be difficult to wear a bathing suit without experiencing discomfort, and in some cases the labia protrude so far that they’re easily noticeable to an onlooker.
A labiaplasty reduces the labia minora so that the inner ‘lips’ don’t protrude from the outer ‘lips’ – this will give a more aesthetically pleasing look, help to reduce or eliminate discomfort, and can lead to much greater sexual satisfaction.
So how’s the procedure work? The surgeon will normally use a laser or scalpel to cut out a “V” shaped wedge out of the labia, so that it can be sewn into a more natural looking shape and position. The surgery will generally be carried out under a local anaesthetic (possibly backed up by sedation) and will usually take from one to two hours. While most patients remain in hospital overnight, some are able to go home the same day.
After the operation is complete there may be some slight bleeding so it’s sensible to wear a panty liner and loose underwear for up to a fortnight, and it’s generally recommended that any sexual activity is avoided for up to six weeks after the surgery. Labiaplasty is becoming more and more popular, with many clinics offering the surgery. It is however important to seek advice from your local GP or clinic.
Labiaplasty, also known as Labia reduction and labioplasty, is a surgical cosmetic procedure that will reduce the size of the inner labia (labia minora), which are the inner lips of the vagina. They come in all shapes and sizes. If you feel uncomfortable with the size or shape of your labia, labial reduction surgery can help with improving asymmetries, size or appearance.
Women may be interested in this procedure for a number of reasons. The labia may be causing discomfort during activities such as cycling or walking, or during sexual intercourse, or their appearance may make you feel unhappy or self-conscious. They may change with age or after childbirth. Vaginal cosmetic surgery could help you overcome these problems. This procedure can be extremely rewarding and can greatly increase your confidence.
Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthetic and usually takes less than an hour to perform. Several techniques are available to obtain a natural looking result. The wound is sealed using dissolvable stitches that do not generally need to be removed afterwards.
