For many people the joy of anticipating a brand new home theater system is sometimes overshadowed by the daunting task of putting in the brand new system. Home Theater set up doesn't have to be complicated if you take time to do a few preparations first.

You need to decide if the wires to the surround system are going to be run across the baseboard, along the ceiling molding, or beneath carpets. You also need to choose where you are going to mount your speakers, making sure the wall will support their weight or that stands aren't placed in areas where they will be quickly knocked over.

Oh, and here is something that most people don't think about. Where are the power outlets in your room? If you have a newer house, they will be everywhere and you probably don't have to worry about having enough. But if you have an older home, you might need to add some outlets to your walls, either by yourself or by hiring an electrician. Home entertainment systems take up a lot of outlet space. So unless you have a few power strips on hand, you'll need to think long and hard about outlet placement.

The length from your sofa or reclining chair to your system should also be assessed before the system arrives. That will be important when you set up the sound system. If the system doesn't come with cables, you will want to be ready and know just how long of a cable you'll need. Plus, you will want a good picture and sound quality, right? So purchasing top quality cables instead of the basic ones the system comes with a very good idea.

Want to hear the best advice I could give on home theater systems: read the manual before you set it up. Sure, you can probably figure it out yourself. After all, you're sensible and it can't be that complex. But reading through the manual beforehand will show you if there are unique features to watch out for and set up, as well as indicating the ideal placement of each component.

Finally, label everything. The wires that run in between components will be many different colors or they might look precisely the same. This makes it easier to unplug one component without taking others offline as well as assisting in any upcoming changes or moves you might do to your system. After you have set up your home theater system it is usually smart to make a diagram of all the components for future reference. This diagram and the manual should then be put in a secure location for future reference.
