Robotics in surgery also sometimes known as computer assisted surgery or surgery assisted by robots is the term used for the latest developments in technology that utilize robotic methods to help in the surgical process. Robotics was first used in 1985 when a robotic arm was utilized in a key-hole surgery to carry out a neuro-surgical biopsy. It turned out to be extremely successful thereby paving the way for the use of the robotic arm in different surgical procedures.

The precision and the efficiency of robotics in surgery made it possible to utilize this ground breaking form of surgery in many gynecological surgeries, urological surgeries like robotic cystectomy for cancer in the bladder or cancer of the kidney, neurological and other general surgical processes.

Typically, in robotic surgery, the surgeon utilizes either of two techniques in order to manage the instruments he is using. The first is the telemanipulator method or he can control instruments via a computer. Now the telemanipulator is a remotely controlled manipulator that permits the surgeon to carry out the customary surgical movements, whereas in robotic surgery the robotic arms perform those same movements instead of the surgeon’s hands, using manipulators and end-effectors. These are controlled by the surgeon by means of a computer console that provides magnified 3D vision of the site of the surgery. This could even mean that the presence of a surgeon may not be required because he can manipulate the robotic arms from any place in the world!

Robotic surgery permits the doctor to carry out a variety of complicated surgical procedures with far more control, flexibility and accuracy than what could be performed by the traditional surgical techniques. This technique is generally coupled with laparoscopic surgery wherein surgery is conducted via very small incisions.

This method is now widely used in hospitals in the US and Europe for treating a variety of conditions. The most extensively utilized surgical procedure in robotics comprise of the mechanical arm and the camera arm that have surgical instruments fastened to them.

The robotic arm called the endo-wrist repeats the precise and the experienced movements of the hands of the surgeon who is now controlling it. The procedures of robotic in surgery, especially those carried out by German doctors, are believed to have enhanced the importance of this form of surgery greatly.

Some of the major advantages of this form of robotics surgery are:

- Far less complications
- Much less pain or loss of blood
- Recovery from surgery is faster
- And the surgical scars are much smaller and not as noticeable either.
