The Marathi Matrimonial customs varies for the different castes and communities of the state. Marathi people have numerous traditions that depend on the region and the religion.

The people from the state of Maharashtra trace their lineage to the Indo-Aryan racial group and are popularly known as Marathi. The language, culture, literature, art and religious practices of the people of the state are distinctive. The Marathi Matrimonial customs and traditions also differ from the other states.
The Marathi Matrimony customs varies for the different castes and communities of the state. Marathi people have numerous traditions that depend on the region and the religion. Most of the population in the state of Maharashtra is Hindus. The practicing Hindus in the state mostly belong to the feudal Marathas caste. There is also a good population of Kulin Maratha Hindu community, which comes under the Kshatriya group. Another well-known community is the Maratha-Kunbi community. This is an occupational Hindu community mostly engaged in agricultural activities. All these Hindus communities have similar Marathi Matrimonial rites and customs.
The Marathi Matrimonial traditions for the Marathi Brahmins include the ancient Hindu Vedic rites. The Marathi Brahmin community has considerable less population as compared to other Hindu castes in the state. This community comprises of six groups such as Chitpavan, Deshastha, Saraswat, Karhade, Devrukhe and Daivadnya. Culturally the Brahmin community of the state is associated in contributing and developing Marathi arts and literature. The members also contributed into bringing about numerous social reforms.
Apart from the Hindu upper caste members, there are communities of Marathi scheduled castes like Mahar, Chambhar and Mang. The Mang community members are mostly follower of Buddhism. Most of the community members are settled in the region of Vidarbha. The Mang community practice wedding rituals according to the Buddhist religion.
Another prominent community in the state of Maharashtra is the Dhangar. The community members trace their lineage to the ruling class of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The Dhangar community is further divided into sun groups like Ahir, Hatkar, Dange, Kokani and Shegar. The Dhangar community is mostly followers of the Hindu religion and follows the Hindu Marathi Matrimonial customs and traditions.
There are many occupational community engaged in professions like tailoring, shoe making, oil extraction and carpentry. The castes names are Chambhars, Sutar, Shimpi, Sonar, Mali, Nabhik and Teli. Most of the communities are practicing Hindus and have similar Marathi Matrimonial customs as well. Another popular community is the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu. The members of this community follow the Kshatriya-Kayastha Marathi Matrimonial customs and the wedding spans over a period of several days.
Apart from the Hindu communities in Maharashtra, there are specific Christian communities. Most of the Christians in Maharashtra reside in the Konkan belt and in Mumbai city. There is another group of Marathi Christians mostly settled in the Solapur and Ahmednagar districts. The Christians from the state speaks Marathi but their wedding rituals are in accordance with the rules of Christianity. The Christian brides wear gowns on the wedding day while for the reception party they wear either Indian saris or western dress.
The state of Maharashtra also has a good number of Muslim community members. There are two distinct communities of Islamic followers. Some people are converted to Islam and are known as Marathi Muslims. There are also Muslims who have come from northern parts of the country and are settled here. The wedding customs of the Muslims follows the Islamic laws of marriage.
Some Sikh communities members are have made the state of Maharashtra as their home. They are popularly known as Maharashtrian Sikh or Dakhani Sikh. Most of them came and settled in the state of Maharashtra three centuries ago. Most of the Sikh members speak Marathi language. The Sikh wedding known as Anand Karaj takes place in presence of the holy book, Guru Granth Sahib. For the Sikh community members, the matrimonial customs are a good mix of Marathi culture and rituals of Sikh wedding.
