The little boy was eagerly waiting for the feedback of the judges. There was a bright ray of hope in his face as he was expecting a good feedback from the side of the judges. The boy truly deserved a positive feedback as he performed quite well in the show. His songs touched the soul of every viewer who was watching it. While the boy seemed completely satisfied with his song, the judges thought it to be dull singing. With the system of public voting on, they hoped to see him perform the next time. The boy couldn’t control his feelings and burst into tears. Soon after that, he fainted and was hospitalized on the spot.

Is innocence taken over by another chapter of glamour in children’s syllabus? In today’s Indian scenario, a variety of reality shows appear each year that give a chance to the participants to showcase their talents; be it singing, dancing, comedy and what not. But surely our society, in this hunger of glam-sham and popularity, forget to realize how expectations like these from such a tender age can prove to be detrimental. In the guise of so-called innovative reality shows, that basically target to nurture the child’s inner potential, actually end up putting a full stop to the childhood. Childhood is that rare time when our kids need to play, relax and enjoy their surrounding beauty. It is the time to learn things and not to be engaged into any sort of competition. It is the time to appreciate the best and most playful time of one’s life.

Apart from the glamour, the money in the reality shows often attracts the kids and their parents. The winner of such shows gets a huge amount of money and also gets employment opportunities. In such a time when there is a hue and cry regarding the child labor, are not we engaging our kids in child labor? There is no harm in productive competition, but this shouldn’t develop any negative feeling among the kids. When kids indulge in any of the reality shows, they work hard day and night to reach the zenith. This feeling sometime becomes destructive for them also. Many kids lose their mental stability after losing the game or the competition. Unfortunately the flaw lies within the periphery of the family of such adolescents and their unreasonable expectations from their child.

It is frequently noticed among kids participating in reality shows that they want to win the game for the sake of their father or mother. Parents always appreciate such achievements which they themselves failed to experience in their own life. However, they never realize that in the name of extending the ‘required support’ to their kid, they literally add a ‘burden’ to the child’s mental and physical health. Furthermore, it is ‘they’ who behave childlike when they agree to put at stake the child’s academics as that arena becomes secondary to winning fame and money! At the end of the day- children are children. You cannot expect them to be self- parenting their own immature decisions. We are thus expected to safeguard them and their future; and exposing them to more productive ways of life.
