It's historical significance and contribution in building modern India is widely appreciated and acknowledged. Moreover, Kerala is always remembered for its skilled manpower which is predominant with it's global presence. A landmark achievement for Kerala was that when it was listed by the 'National Geographic Traveller' as one of the ten must see places of the world. Kerala's dashing phase of glory as a tourist destination started in the 1980's. Before that is was a less known spot and the top priority tourist destinations belonged to northern India.

Historical Significance

From ancient period Kerala has always attracted travelers and traders from various continents and far-off countries. The prime attraction for traders was its abundant availability of spices which was at that period more valued then gold. Kerala was known as the spice coast of India and the spice trade flourished in such a way that there was stiff competition in order to gain access to it's spices. The Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Romans, Portuguese, Dutch, French and the British came for trade and gradually turned as rulers in order to exploit the vast natural resources and cheap labor. The importance of such intrusion and trade was that they all had left strong influences in our art, culture,cuisine and architecture.

After its joining in the Indian Union, Kerala economy growth was based on the concept of Welfare state and democratic socialist principles.

Beaches & Coastline

Kerala has a vast coastline of about 580 km and is rich with splendid beaches. In the western coast it is embraced by Arabian Sea and the cool breeze from the sea added attraction to the life in the beaches. The top in the list is the Kovalam Beach followed by Allapuzha Beach, Varkala Beach, Cherai Beach, Nattika Beach (Thrissur), Vadanappilly Beach ( Thrissur), Marari Beach, Kollam Beach, Fort Kochi and Muzhappalingad beach in Kannur which is the only drive-in-beach in Kerala.

BackWaters

Kerala is famous for its backwaters and it's Kettuvalam's with all its pomp and glory. Among the back waters - Alleppey Known as the "Venice of the East" is more popular followed by Kollam and Kottayam. During the month of August an annual boat race called Vallam Kali( Snake boat race) takes place. The most famous of the backwaters is the Ashtamudi Lake and Vembanad Lake.

Hill Stations

Wester Ghats infringes the eastern part of Kerala and as a result there is ample hill stations which are also illustrious tourist destinations. These areas are also famous for its wild areas, forests, green canopy and wildlife sancturies. The top hill stations in the region are Devikulam, Munnar, Nelliampathi,Vagamon, Ponmudi, Peermade, Wayanad and Kottancheri Hills.


Wildlife with it's flora and fauna.

Kerala forest consist of wet evergreen rainforests at lower elevations and semi-evergreen forests in the east which is prone to humid tropical climate. Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Silent Valley National Park in the Kundali Hills are some of them. Noted Wetlands which is listed in the Ramsar Convention is also in Kerala and they are Vembanad - Kol Wetlands and Lake Sasthamcotta.

Ayurvedic Tourism

Kerala is also famous for its Ayurveda and Sidha system of medicine. These traditional system of medicine is attracting lot of foreigners and is an industry with vast prospects. High cost of health care in developed countries has led to the phenomenon of people searching for locations with less cost. This has created a spur in our health industry and the unique system of medicine is attracting lot of people.
