Kettuvallam means a boat tied with ropes. The length of the houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet in length and has a width around 15 feet. It is made of wooden planks joined and tied together wit coconut fiber ropes. Anjili is the wood that is used to construct this boat. The roof is covered with bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior is painted with cashew nut oil to protect it from climatic conditions and humidity. This is an ancient mode of transportation when there were little roads and no rail transportation, this turned to be the best option and people transported their goods using it. Inside there were enough space for sleeping and cooking for the boatmen. The new genre boats are a modified and re-designed version of the old concept.
