Kakinada is a centre for business people and is the Head Quarters of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Long time back, Kakinada was considered as “Second Madras”. The original name of this place was Kakanandivada named by the king of Ikshavaku, Kaka. During 17th century, some parts of the city was occupied by the Dutch and named this place as Co-Canada. The name was then changed to Kakinada after the independence during 1947.
Kakinada was under the rule of the Nandi Kings, followed by the British. After the European settlers came into this region, the city developed substantially. The Dutch were one of the first settlers in the region followed by the British. Several signs of colonial times are seen around the city even today. Kakinada is often referred to as the “Fertilizer City” because there are numerous fertilizer plants in this place. It is also known as the “Pensioner’s Paradise” because the city is very well planned, and at the same time very peaceful. It is now ranked as the fifth largest city in Andhra Pradesh and the fourth largest city in coastal Andhra because of its dense population.
Kakinada has a rich culture which directly reflects in the numerous temples, mosques and churches located in and around the city, along with the many festivals celebrated here. Pongal, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Dashera, Diwali, Christmas and Ramzan are some of the most popular festivals celebrated in this region.
Kakinada has a tropical savanna climate. The weather is hot and humid for most of the year. The hottest part of the year is late May to early June. The coolest part of the year is January and the northeast monsoon prevails from mid-October to mid-December. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal frequently hit the city.
The cuisines include the traditional Andhra food with Aavakaaya pickle which is made from mangoes. Kakinada is also famous for its delicious Pesarattu, a breakfast or brunch item formed into crêpes from moong daal (pesara pappu), green chillies, ginger and cumin. This city is also famous for its unique Kakinada Kaaja, a sweet made from maida and dipped in sugar syrup. Pootarekulu is a sweet in coastal Andhra, made of thin sugar plates.
