Jaipur has a very interesting history. The city is famously known as the Pink City that was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, a Kachhwaha Rajput ruler who was a great patron of art and architecture and took great interest in designing the city. He consulted several books on art and architecture before designing the city.
In 1853, when the Prince of Wales visited Jaipur, the whole city was painted in Pink to welcome him. To this day, the neat and broadly laid-out avenues, painted in pink provide a magical charm to the city.
Jaipur is the first planned city of India. The construction of the city was started in 1727 and it took four years to complete its palaces, roads and squares. The city was built following the principles of Shilpa Shastra, the Indian architecture.
The Pink City was divided into nine blocks, out of which two consisted the state buildings and palaces. The remaining seven blocks were allotted to the public. Huge fortification walls were erected along with seven prominent gates, to secure the city following several battles with the Marathas.
Jaipur tourism is a major part of a tourist‘s itinerary in India. The magnificent forts, beautiful havelis and colorful markets make Jaipur one of the most popular tourist destinations in North India.
