1) Dandruff: Like other areas, the skin on head also keeps shedding dead cells. When this shedding becomes abnormally excessive, you will find large dead skin flakes. These cause mild or moderate irritation and itching. This is called dandruff. This condition arises when you expose your head to extreme heat or cold weather. 4) Seborrheic Dermatitis: This condition is a skin disorder that affects the scalp. The sebaceous glands go hyperactive and this leads to flaking, itching and hair loss. Anyone, irrespective of their gender could face this problem. However, it is more seen in young men. It is yet not proven what causes this disorder. Some factors like hormones and genes have been pointed though. It is also believed that another cause for this could be if one is sensitive to Malassezia - a kind of yeast. Medicated shampoo with ketoconazole, coal tar or salicylic acid will help to deal with this disorder.

5) Psoriasis: This is a skin problem in which the scalp forms thick plaques. Symptoms are similar to Seborrheic dermatitis that include red inflammation, flaking and itching. To deal with milder cases of this disorder, shampoos work well. For extreme cases medical treatment is required. Even phototherapy has helped psoriasis patients.

Tips:

1. Eating nutritious diet and taking a quality multi-vitamin supplement ( such as fish oil, iron, vit E, B complex and zinc) each day is important to promote healthy hair growth and stop hair loss.
