Electrics cars were stuff of dreams about 7-8 years ago, now they are reality and part of every new car buyer’s decision process. New electric cars are here, they have arrived in their masses with the likes of the Nissan Leaf, Peugeot i-On and the Citroen C-Zero. Plug in electric cars are still expensive but thanks to a UK government grant all fall under the £30,000 mark. I should add electric cars are not just an option of new car buyers; used car dealers in NI now have stock of used Nissan Leaf models.
The question is, are we now getting overwhelmed with the number of electric cars entering the market? Recently the government discount for plug-in cars has been granted for the new Vauxhall Ampera and the Plug-in Prius. Vauxhall and Toyota have confirmed that they intent to sell around 3,000 and 1,000 units a year respectively. Vauxhall’s Chevrolet Volt will also enter the market at the same time, making up the expected 4,750 plug-in electric models per year.
In the next two or three years we will also have the Renault Zoe, with around 4,000 units a year expected for the UK. Nissan will be building around 3,000 Leafs for the UK in Sunderland and Smart will be bringing around 250 units into the country. On top of this we are expecting an electric Ford Focus, a couple of Volvos and even some electric Protons. Soon enough we will have a total of over 9,000 electric car units available in the UK.
Now, I love the thought of green cars, and it seems most manufacturers are on board with plug-in electric models. But, I think that before we are offered all this choice we first need to be reassured that the charging infrastructure is in place, otherwise these cars will be to impractical
