At the beginning of 2011 many people are predicting that this is the year when the internet and television will finally come together. A lot, of course, relies on the hardware that is available, with some television manufacturers offering sets that come with restricted internet usage, but no one yet has taken on the final hurdle.

So far, that means we've been relying on a variety of set top boxes to access internet directly from our televisions, if we've even tried to do it. Of course, one of prerequisites for using the internet and the television together is having the best broadband connection available, but with broadband speeds improving all the time, it's unlikely that tele-internet will be restricted by connection speed.

At the moment the situation is a bit like the chicken and the egg, the television manufacturers don't want to create a television that is internet ready until everyone else guarantees a service, and vice versa. In 2011, however, several high profile projects will be completed that could change all that.

The question many critics are asking, however, is will there actually be much merit in such a system? Admittedly it will mean that people can access the back catalogue of shows that they've missed, but some services have already meant that that's not such an issue. In fact, just about everything to do with watching television that you might want to use the internet for is already being offered by other service providers.

Additionally, internet and television combined is not going to bypass games consoles, or the need for them, it will, however, mean that when it comes to new internet services like film streaming, you won't need to have a laptop or a computer plugged into your television screen to get an image big enough that the whole family can watch.

Ultimately, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, which in this case means price. With providers already offering a range of services) in one cheap package, internet television could find itself already priced out of the market before it starts. Still, 2011 looks like the year in which the first efforts will be made, but a more general revolution in home entertainment is going to be required before it really catches on.
