Interior design can get expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. With some fabric, a sewing machine, and an adventurous spirit, you can create unique, interesting, and beautiful designs for your home and a fraction of the price of buying retail items.

If you can sew and you own a sewing machine, then you have the perfect tool for a variety of Interior Design jobs. Fabric is what makes your home welcoming and comfortable. It gives softness to all the hard edges. If you think about all the fabrics in your home, you will realize that they are a major part of your home. From window treatments to upholstery, bedding, bath and kitchen linens; they are an integral part of every room. Home interior linens can be very expensive to purchase, especially if you want quality items that will last. If you sew, you can make most of these linens far less expensively, and have them in the exact fabric, color and style that you want.
DIY To Save:
Although the cost of fabric has risen in the past few years, as has the cost of everything else; fabric is still not as expensive as buying the name brand finished product. There are many discount fabric stores for acquiring fabric. Upholstery fabric is usually discounted when it is an end of the roll like carpet, and other fabrics when the bolts are down to the last yard or so, called a remnant. You can discover some absolutely beautiful quality fabrics, the full price of which you might not have wanted to pay. Good quality sheets and fabric shower curtains are also excellent sources of easy care washable fabrics that can be made into curtains, pillows and cushions. There is also a wide variety of outdoor fabrics available for outdoor furniture projects.
Sewing Can Create Unique, Beautiful Designs:
Even if you do not wish to use homemade sheets or attempt to reupholster your own furniture, there are still many things you can make yourself, to enhance the décor of your home. Try making some toss pillows. They can be a variety of shapes and sizes and decorated with embroidery, beading, appliques, buttons, ribbons or any number of things. The possible styles you can create are only limited to your imagination. You can find a number of creative solutions in magazines and online, that will provide patterns and/or step by step instructions.
Choose Your Projects Wisely:
Unless you are very experienced with a sewing machine, making drapes is probably not a good idea. In order for them to hang properly and look uniform, there are tricks that professionals use that you may not know. The backing that is used to hold the pleats in place may be too hard on your non-commercial sewing machine. However, the trends today call for a softer look with long flowing full-length curtains puddled on the floor. These are very easy to make. All you have to do is measure the window, hem the material and sew a pocket or tabs on the top for the hardware rod.
These are quick and easy solutions that anyone who sews can accomplish with a sewing machine, a tape measure and a pair of scissors.
