The demand for residential elevators is increasing with the rise in the number of multi-storey homes. Elevators make it possible for people with special needs to live in multi-storey buildings. Moreover, they are a great solution when it comes to transporting heavy goods up and down several floors. Architects, designers and builders installing residential elevators in multi-storey buildings need to take several factors into consideration.

Installing a Residential Elevator – Points to Consider

Contemporary home elevators come in various models and can add great value to a home. They must offer a quiet, smooth, safe and comfortable ride, and be durable and easy to maintain. Factors that need to be considered when setting up elevators in multi-storey homes include cost, weight capacity, car size, speed, finish of cabin, drive system, number of stops, and so on.

• Number of floors: Elevators for multi-level buildings can travel up to different heights and the number of stops is specific – it could be five, six, or more. So this needs to be considered.

• Car size and weight capacity: As residential buildings feature several homes on a floor, it is important that the car size is sufficiently large. Weight capacity must also be adequate as the equipment is also used to transport heavy goods between floors. Study models can hold more than 1000 lbs.

• Building space: The elevator should be one that can meet the space constraints of the multi-storey building. For instance, Federal Elevator’s Panorama occupies limited space, and is ideal for residential buildings with space limitations.

• Drive system: The drive systems commonly available include winding drum, hydraulic, chain drive counterweight and gearless.
- In the winding drum system, the elevator is supported by thick steel cables from a reel at the top pf the shaft. An example is the Destiny Winding Drum from ThyssenKrupp Access.
- The hydraulic system works by pumping oil in and out of a steel cylinder and ensures a smooth ride, and gentle start and stop. It is a popular option for residential buildings. The Renaissance, a Federal Elevator product, comes with an efficient cable hydraulic drive system.
- The chain drive counterweight system uses chains instead of cables and is less expensive. The Eclipse residential elevator from Savaria is an example. It features a compact chain drive system and requires no machine room.
- The gearless model is eco-friendly and works on cutting-edge gearless technology. The Destiny Gearless from ThyssenKrupp Access is an efficient gearless elevator for homes.

• Safety features: Elevators for residences must include standard safety features such as door interlocks, lockable auxiliary disconnect for car lighting circuit, lockable auxiliary disconnect for drive unit circuit, pit switch and car top stop switch, battery backup emergency light and alarm, car gate safety switch, and so on.

• Cost: This depends on whether the type of elevator and whether it is being installed new or retrofitted into a building. A winding drum elevator is less expensive than a hydraulically operated one as it does not require a separate machine room. An elevator with a gearless traction drive is the most expensive.

Professional Support for Purchase, Installation and Maintenance

Builders and architects installing residential elevators in multi-storey buildings usually rely on elevator suppliers for when it comes to choosing, installing and maintaining elevators. All residential elevator equipment must be installed by a licensed elevator contractor and meet local requirements. Safety standards must comply with ASME 17.1. Therefore, it is important to partner with the right dealer – one that can offer a wide choice of models as well as professional support for installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair.
