Driveways and Walkways

Traditionally driveways feature in a front yard and this may also include walkways, although walkways may extend to the back yard, driveways rarely do. Installing brick pavers for a driveway is a neat and extremely hardwearing, practical solution and they come in a variety of shapes and colors to create a multitude of patterns and designs. Landscape Art specializes in brick paver driveways and pathways, however it is always a good idea to become familiarized with the process and how it is accomplished.

Virtually Anything is Possible

One of the neat things about paving a brick front yard driveway for homes on corners and cul-de-sacs, is the curb appeal of a "pull through" or "executive" driveway. But this is only one example of design. It makes the entire or the most part of the front yard the actual driveway. For corner lots the brick paver driveway may cut straight through the yard, for middle lots, half circles may be designed, so it is basically a driveway where no turning is required and the vehicle pulls straight through. This also makes for a convenient as well as low maintenance front yard in terms of landscaping.

The Steps Your Landscaper Will Take

Although the laying of brick pavers is a labor intensive process, Landscape Art knows their business; it will take them a matter of hours to complete the entire process. The first steps taken include planning and layout, for which the home owner needs input. Remember to take landscapers suggestions seriously, they may not have all the answers, but they will certainly have most.

Excavation is next, then comes preparing the base material, setting edge restraints, laying the sand, limestone and or gravel bedding and then only laying the pavers. The brick pavers may need to be trimmed and more edging restraints such as concrete installed and the pavers are then sealed or treated.

There are certain considerations such as ensuring that the slab for the driveway slopes slightly downwards away from the house. This is to ensure water run-off is adequate – generally this is about 1" for every 4' of driveway. Imagine trying to get the ratio correct if you were to do this yourself?! It is not feasible or practical, and certainly not simple!

Edge restraints for brick paver installation is vitally important, while in some instances this is done prior to the bricks being laid, in many instances this is the second last process, prior to treating and sealing the pavers. High traffic and harsh weather will ruin the surface of your driveway in no time, without these restraints in place. Steel, aluminum, pre-cast concrete and even plastic is used. Laying the pavers is the easiest part of this process as well as the most fun, and this is when the driveway actually comes to life. It is completed by filling the joints with dry sand, by sweeping it over the surface, after that the bricks are sealed, and that’s that. Installing brick pavers for driveway takes perhaps two days to complete, depending on the size of the area to be paved.
