Men have invented and implemented techniques to stay in touch with the closed ones living far away. So, with the passage of time and progress of science we have got much improved communication modes. Mailing system or telephonic conversation exemplifies scientific boons to benefit us a lot. But it is the electronic mailing system that has almost become synonymous with a revolutionary concept. With emerging importance of emails, it became imperative to conjure up an excellent mail delivery mechanism. So, SMTP was developed. Nowadays faster and smoother mail sending is just a child’s play, thanks to SMTP relay server.
SMTP is very user friendly and that is why quite popular with the mail senders. With the help of a short-listed commands and reply codes, it dispatches mails to the SMTP servers and generates error message in case the sent mails do not reach the mentioned destinations. Another advantage of this protocol is it can work on different platforms of operating system. So, the users do not have to worry about installing this protocol software if they are working on Microsoft operating system. It is best for them to use built-in SMTP servers in Microsoft IIS. Now this Microsoft IIS comes with Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 option pack. The laptop users will gain the most by using the SMTP component as they frequently have to toggle between dial up and high speed connection to have an access to their POP accounts. It is not a tough task to install SMTP servers and the users can do it by themselves without the help of a networking engineer. Let me now teach you how to do that.
First open the control panel of Windows 2000.
Go to the Add/Remove program applet.
Place the cursor on Add/Remove Windows Components. Select it.
Scroll down to view the Internet Information Services check box.
Click details.
A dialog box will pop up. Click the SMTP Service check box. Your system will now start installing IIS and Web server components.
Once the afore-stated steps are followed to a T, input the command telnet 127.0.0.1 25 to check if the system is working perfectly.
If everything is okay and the system is working fine, ESTMP (Enhanced Mail Transfer Protocol) mails service message flashes on the screen.
Once the SMTP servers are installed, it is time to configure the SMTP service. Follow the instructions; it will not be difficult for you to get the job done.
Click start.
Go to the Administrative Tools and then to Internet Information Service.
A dialog box will come up on the screen.
Set up IIS.
It is the Access tab on which you have to do the most important setting of specifying the computers or blocking the specific IP addresses which are able to relay mails via your SMTP relay server.
If you wish, you may configure your system in such a way that it only connects to the localhost. It will prevent the other SMTP servers system from setting up connection with your SMTP server.
The final step of setting up an SMTP relay server is to configure the client system. Make sure to change the Outgoing Mail or SMTP server to localhost irrespective of the email client you are using. Now you do not have to change your outbound SMTP server to send mails even if you switch between the dial-up and network connections.
