Frequent problems in either falling asleep or staying asleep during night, are known as insomnia.
A) Characteristics of insomnia:

1. Frequent problems in either falling asleep or staying asleep during night, are known as insomnia.
2. The most common causes of difficulty in sleeping are eating late and or heavy meal, or drinking lot of alcohol or tea,

cola, coffee than usual.
3. A sedentary job or lack of adequate physical exercise on most days may also result in insomnia. Irregular working

hours, working late at night or in shift duties, excess of tiredness usually result in insomnia.
4. A person suffering from anxiety and or depression may suffer from insomnia and find it difficult to fall asleep when he

goes to bed at night or may wake during night or very early morning and find it difficult to fall asleep again.
5. Heart or lung disorders can make person breathless on lying down flat and may affect your sleep.
6. Suddenly reducing/quitting medicines like tranquillizers, sleeping pill may result in insomnia.
7. Common sign and symptoms of insomnia are body ache, feeling heaviness in head, yawning, dizziness, sense of

heaviness in body and indigestion, feeling drowsy etc.
8. Many people find they sleep less as they grow older and are a universal problem.
9. Some sleeplessness is common during pregnancy especially during last few weeks before delivery.

B) Aims of massage:

1. To help in relaxation of mind and body reducing undue stress over it as massage works on physical level as well as on

psyche through sense of touch.
2. To reduce anxiety, depression etc by relieving mental stress.
3. To reduce overall sign and symptoms of insomnia like body ache etc.
4. Proper adequate head massage may help to increase neurotransmitters and hormone called serotinin, depletion of

which to brain result in anxiety, depression, irritability etc and leads to disturbance of sleep.

C) Process of massage:

1. Body area to be massaged: Mainly over head but usually full body massage is recommended.
2. Direction of massage movements:
* Over top of head, movements should be in circular or vertical direction.
* Over back of head it should be in vertical direction.
* Over temporal region (above ears) it should be circular.
* Both feet should also be massaged in vertical direction.
3. Useful massage tips:

* Oil should be warm at the time of massage.
* Use little amount of oil at a time or oil will flow down over neck and other body parts.
* Avoid using more pressure or friction overhead as it will hurt hair roots and cause pain.
* Avoid using palm over top of head, Instead, circular or vertical action of fingers like index and middle finger along with

thumb is useful to facilitate absorption of oil.
* Center of forehead as well as lateral ends of forehead should be massaged with circular action of thumb.
* More oil should be massaged over soft spot on top of head.
* Massage could be done either in morning or in evening before sleeping it will help in more relaxation and induce sleep.
* Continuous massage for 25-30minutes should be given. At least 7days continuously massage must be given for having

visible effect.

D) Use of different oils for massage:

1. Oils either hot/cold in nature, but that will nourish brain or other tissues should be preferred.
2. Oils like sesame oil, coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil etc can be used.
3. Herbal drugs like bacopa monnerei, sida cordifolia etc should be added to sesame oil used as base during preparation

of medicinal oil as these drugs provide strength and nourishment to brain and relieve mental stress and thus promote sleep.
