Information broker is an individual that provide services in finding information. This information can be anything from primary information, secondary information, and even information regarding their client’s competitors. Primary information means information coming from direct sources thru the aid of various tools such as surveys. Secondary information is information found in different media such as in books, TV, and the internet. Much of their services are used in market research, patents, product development and competitor updates.
The word ‘broker’ in information broker is somehow misleading. Information brokers are not middlemen for sellers and end users of information. Usually they operate directly under their client, thus no official “Brokering” is involved.
Information brokers are also called business researchers. They are also commonly called contract researchers, independent information researchers or consultants, and information consultants. Many of the information brokers today have a Master’s degree in Library Science. People with degrees or with Masters Degree in Law, Social Science and Liberal Arts can also go into the information broker’s profession.
There is no certification or licensing needed for one to become an information broker. However being a former librarian or a degree in Library Science can give you an edge and will put you ahead of the competition.
Being an information broker, you should also possess various skills. One of the most important skills needed in this profession is computer and internet proficiency. You must be adept in internet and other data base searches. You also must have a good sense of organizing the files that you’ve gathered. Aside from these, an information broker can also do his job the old fashion way by means of reading books, going to libraries, interviewing resource persons, doing market research or conducting surveys.
It is also important for an information broker to have a wide range of interest so that he can better understand the topics of his searches or the needs of his clients. A good information broker must have an interest in various fields such as Politics, Economics, Pop Culture, Natural Science, Business and Finance, Technology, Medicine, Travel and a lot more.
As an information broker, you may opt to work under an information broker firm or start your own information broker business.
For those who would want to start up his own information broker business, he can this even inside the confines of his own home. All you need is a space for you to work in, a table, a computer, internet and phone connection, fax machine and some office equipments and supplies.
Since there are no licensing involved in the information broker profession, it is best to join reputable Information broker groups to give your business more credibility. Joining information broker forums in the internet is a good way to boost your rankings.
While looking for clients, it is best to offer your strong suits. Advertise your field of expertise such as in the field of Medicine, or Finance. Making a website or a Blog for your company can help you attract more clients.

You can do this by subscribing to various data base services or joining independent information broker groups. The government is also one of the best and reliable sources of information, so it is best to know most of official government websites and subscribe to their news feeds.
