Boxes for moving should be tested to be at 32ECT which can handle 200 pounds. This strength is the most commonly recommended strength for boxes that are used for moving. Quite often boxes that are 45% weaker are sold in stores but they are not considered strong enough for use when moving. You can find the strength of a box on its bottom flap. Manufacturers of boxes must put a seal on the bottom flap that states what strength weight the box tested. The seal will also tell you the recommended amount of weight the box can best hold without tearing.
The most common reason damage occurs to items in boxes for moving while they are being shipped is the box has been incorrectly packed. When the packer leaves space empty in the box items can shift and get damaged. A good packer will fill any empty space with packing paper or bubble wrap to fill the space. So unless you have plenty to fill a large box, a smaller box might be better to pack items in so you will not use as much bubble wrap.
If you are going to reuse boxes for moving check the glue in the seams of the box. Often as the box gets used through time the glue will begin to lose strength and weaken the seam. Also if the box has gotten wet in the past it is not going to be the same strength as it was new. Professional shipping companies like UPS and FedEx do not allow items to be shipped in used boxes.
When you buy boxes for moving you can get extra strong boxes for specific items in your home. You can get boxes made specifically for televisions, appliances, mirrors, dishes, and books. You can also get a wardrobe box with a metal rod across the inside near the top. This box is good for hanging clothing you have in your closet and placing other items in the bottom of the box from your closet. You can also get boxes that are for paperwork. These types of boxes are often chemically treated to prevent mildew if you store the papers in the box after you move.
Remember to label all boxes for moving showing what is in them and who owns it. Labeling it on multiple sides is helpful. If the box is labeled on multiple sides then no matter which side is facing the front you will know what is in it. Make sure to use permanent markers so if the box gets wet the ink does not smear causing a potential problem with the delivery being successful.
