Jaundice is a disease caused due to vitiation of the pitta dosha. It is called as kamala. When there is an excessive circulation of the bile pigments in the blood, then this disease is caused. Pitta dosha controls the bile pigments. Jaundice is caused by an increasing amount of bilirubin in the blood. When red blood cells break down, the heme in their hemoglobin is converted to bilirubin. The bilirubin is processed by the liver where it is eliminated in bile. Bilirubin is normally transported to the liver, where it's processed before being eliminated from the body. But newborns initially have more bilirubin than their livers can handle, and the excess causes their skin and, sometimes, the whites of their eyes to turn yellow.
The red blood cells are the ones responsible with the bilirubin. When these cells get old, they are naturally destroyed. Since the blood cells are the carriers of iron-content called hemoglobin that carries oxygen in the blood, this chemical is released from the destroyed cells. When the iron is removed, the remaining chemical content is called bilirubin. The main symptoms of jaundice are headache, fever, extreme point weakness, yellow eyes, skin, tongue, Dark urine, Light-colored stool. The patient also feels abdominal pain or swelling in the liver region. At the starting movement jaundices also irritates with intense itching. There are other causes for jaundice, which are not quite as benign. A very rough birth, which has caused bruising to a baby or large hematomas, may cause jaundice within the first 24 hours after birth. Jaundice so early may also indicate infection or RH incompatibility
In jaundice treatment fruit juices and barley water are effective strictly avoid giving cereals and pulses as it causes inflammation in the liver fatty foods are also avoided. Fresh fruit juices and fruit diet are the best diet for the patient of jaundice and it is necessary for the patient to take good rest. Breast milk may interfere with the liver's ability to conjugate bilirubin therefore the jaundice may be prolonged. Often, it is not necessary to stop breast feeding but if the levels become too high, the paediatrician may recommend stopping for a couple of days for the levels to come down. If your health care provider decides that your baby has physiological jaundice, you will need to feed you infant frequently (every 1-2 hours) and place her by the window, so that she is exposed to daylight. Frequent feedings will promote frequent bowel movements with which bilirubin will be excreted.
Jaundice for one or the other reason, usually appears around the second or third day after the baby is born. It begins from the head of the baby and moves downwards. A jaundiced baby's skin will appear yellow initially on the face, followed by the chest and stomach, and finally, the legs. The hemoglobin in the red blood cells changes into biliruben which is then removed by the liver and excreted into the stools. Babies are born with an excess of red blood cells and often times their livers aren't developed enough to filter out the biliruben.
