The following four processes play the crucial role to get the admission in India’s top B schools. These are described as follows:
|
1. The entrance examination/written test
All top B-Schools in India screen the applicants in first stage by a written aptitude test. Best known B schools in India i.e. Six IIMs conduct the Common Admission Test (CAT) usually in the month of November every year. Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon, S.P. Jain Mumbai, NITIE Bombay and many other B schools and MBA colleges based their selection criteria through CAT scores. Apart from this test other popular written tests in India is XAT (Xavier Admission Test) conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur as a part of its admission process. And the score of this test is a criterion for admission in B schools like BIM Trichy, XIM Bhubaneswar, LIBA Chennai, Goa Institute of Management Goa and XIME Bangalore. FMS Delhi, IIFT Delhi and IIT (Joint Management Entrance Test or JMET) have their own respective tests.
The written test is the first stage of elimination; it tests a student's ability to perform under worst conditions. The syllabus of written examination includes basic mathematics taught till 10th class English taught during the first year of graduation and analytical & logical reasoning. This stage is the most difficult process in getting into a top B-School. Almost maximum elimination takes place at this stage.
In 2010, around 500,000 students took CAT and around 1600 students get admission into the IIMs each year. Which in itself shows the toughness of the CAT?

2. B School Application Essays and Reference Letters
Application Essays play an important part in the selection process of most top B Schools. In the case of IIMs Only those candidates, shortlisted based on their written test scores in CAT are expected to write the essays. Some other top management schools in India such as the SP Jain ask you to write many essays at the first stage itself. In SP Jain case, your application essays play a major role in getting shortlisted for the next stage - viz. Group discussion and personal interview. However, in the IIM’s case, essays could form the basis for the interview round. IIM Bangalore, in the recent past shortlisted only those aspirants who had cleared CAT and been shortlisted for the GD-PI produced three letters of reference. So, always remember if you are planning to get admission in top B schools then meet one of your friends who have applied to these schools in the past and get his application, only to get an idea of what is generally asked.
3. GD/PI (Group discussion & Personal interview)
Based on the performance in the written exams, students are shortlisted for next stage i.e. Group Discussion and Personal Interview. In IIMs, anyone who is shortlisted for the GD/ PI process needs to attend both the group discussion and personal interview. Here in IIM GD is not an elimination stage. However, other B schools could have the GD as an elimination process.
4. Admission
Admission is usually given on the basis of cumulative scores in written test, GD/PIs and work experience (in some cases). Admission notification from top Business schools starts from the month of March and continue till the April end. Many management institutes also have a waiting list of candidates, which make the candidates get updated based on the number of candidates in the first list who accept offers from B schools.
