A neglected child goes through a series of emotional turmoil that affects his/her physical as well as emotional health. The Reactive attachment disorder is a typical behavior disorder that makes the child unsocial and detached from parents.
The change in social structure has created major issues for children below 5 years of age. Busy schedule and long working hours of parents make the child feel ignored and lonesome. This results in various behavior disorders among children. They tend to be more aggressive, depressed, defiant and rebellious.

Improper care and support to the child by the caregiver inhibits proper attachment of the child with his/her primary or secondary caregiver. Due to this, the child suffers from chronic disorders and feels insecure. Some of the common disorders in this context are as follows.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD)

A neglected child goes through a series of emotional turmoil that affects his/her physical as well as emotional health. The Reactive attachment disorder is a typical behavior disorder that makes the child unsocial and detached from parents. Such children avoid physical contact with others and are arrogant in nature. Though RAD basically depends on various genetic as well as environmental factors, yet, most counselors and psychiatrists believe that it happens because of improper care by the parents or the caregivers. In most cases, the parents or the caregivers are unable to understand the emotional as well as security requirements of the child.

Conduct disorder (CD)

A defiant child often shows symptoms of Conduct disorder, which is a serious psychological problem characterized by anti-social behavior and absolute lack of empathy for others. A child suffering from Conduct disorder indulges in unlawful activities like stealing, aggressive behavior towards peers, friends and pets. He/she may not only inflict physical or psychological harm to others, but also suffers from incarceration, injury, depression, substance abuse and death by homicide or suicide. While in most cases, this disorder gets cured within a year, but for some the problem may become a persistent psychological disease. In fact, if the Conduct disorder persists after the age of 18, it may even result in anti-social personality disorder, which is connected to psychopathy.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)

Constant ignorance by parents during the development stage of a child results in Oppositional defiant disorder. Though it is quite similar to RAD, but ODD basically starts when the child is a toddler. Most counselors say that Oppositional defiance may be caused because of improper parenting, strong feeling of separation as well as acute depression. A child suffering from ODD avoids social bonding and mistrusts his/her caregiver. It is characterized by hostile, violent, erratic and rebellious behavior toward the caregiver as well as others. ODD also hinders academic progress and the overall autonomous skill development of the child.

Other Disorders

Unlike RAD, ODD and CD, a child may also suffer from other attachment disorders which happen because of similar reasons like improper parenting, lack of proper attention to the needs of the child as well as past stressful circumstances. For instance, certain psychological problems like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar disorder (BPD) and Post-traumatic stress disorder also affects the overall health of the child. In most cases, it becomes necessary to hospitalize the child in order to keep an eye on his/her physical and mental health.

Though there are various lengthy treatment procedures for these disorders, but a troubled child can be best handled with proper care, understanding and attention by the caregivers or the parents.
