Creating a Las Vegas landscape isn't the easiest thing to plan. When you're working on them you have to keep in mind a lot of different complications that could have your entire layout dead. Only certain things can survive in the desert but how are you supposed to know what they are? Well, here are a few tips to help you while you work.

You may be surprised by the fact that many people forget that they live in a desert when they are planning out their landscaping. They make the mistake of thinking that with enough water and hard work anything will grow in their yard and unfortunately that's not true. No matter how hard you work your gardens aren't going to look like a rain forest. That's just not how it works.

After you make yourself comfortable with the fact that you live in a desert you're ready for the next step. The most basic part of your landscape will either be grass or rock. It's up to you to decide which one but it's important to keep a few things in mind when you're making this basic decision.

Many people feel that grass is some sort of status symbol. It's expensive to keep up and will make your maintenance much harder (after all, you will have to keep it watered, cut, and more than likely patched from time to time), but still individuals can see this as a way to say they care more about their lawns. Of course, there are also people who just like grass better. It's soft, green, and lively. Keep in mind, though, that rocks come in many different styles and colors. They can be just as unique.

Landscaping in Las Vegas isn't only difficult because of the heat. There is also the less than average amount of rain the city gets to take into consideration. This means that your landscape will have to be watered whether by sprinklers or by hand more often than not. Because of this fact purchasing plants that need to be watered often can be a chore.

Speaking of water, there is also that to keep in mind. Watering in Las Vegas can be more than a hassle. It can be expensive. When water conditions get particularly bad the city is forced to ration. This means you will only be able to water on certain days and only so much. Water in the drought ravaged city can also be more expensive than in other cities.

Consider temperature tolerant plants as well. Sometimes it is so hot in the desert that even plants that are supposed to get full sun can burn under the harsh light. When this happens it doesn't matter how much you have or will water your plants. The sun is so hot that pouring water on them is like tossing a cup of water into a bonfire. It really doesn't help much and it can even make their roots boil.

Don't give up on your Las Vegas landscape. There are plenty of nice, flowering plants that are natives to the desert. They can be just as pretty as flowers from greener states. You just have to keep trying to find and plant something that makes you happy.
