Choosing a paralegal school is a very important decision if you are entering this career field. The education you will receive will largely determine how prepared you are to hit the ground running and your prospects of getting a good job once you graduate. Some paralegals work their way up and get training on the job, but the vast majority of them get a degree or certificate in paralegal studies before they get their first job in a law office.
Accreditation
The first factor that you must consider before applying for a paralegal program is whether the school is accredited. There are about 250 paralegal programs in the United States that have been accredited by the American Bar Association. If it’s not accredited, do not consider that particular school—you won’t be able to transfer your credits to another school and your degree or certificate will not be much more than a piece of paper.
Curriculum
The curriculum is key, so you will want to get some details about the general course of study before applying for a paralegal school. Basic topics such as ethics, legal research techniques, legal terminology and legal writing should be covered, but you will also want to look into what electives they offer.
Facility and Faculty
If you’re going to be attending classes at a brick-and-mortar-based institution of higher learning, and not at an online school, you should check out the campus and see what their facilities have to offer. Also find out as much as you can about the faculty there, because they will be the ones giving you instruction and preparing you for your future career. If they don’t have good experience and a strong background in law, they won’t be able to provide much for you.
Job Placement and Alumni Networks
Will the school you’re attending be there to help you out after you graduate? Some programs have job placement services for their graduating students, and many offer very supportive alumni networks for former students to support one another. These are all important factors to consider when choosing a paralegal school.
