Earth, although it is referred to as the blue planet, clean water is rare here. Shockingly, every year, contaminated water accounts for many deaths and, over 2 billion people worldwide rely on an impure water source. Being developed nations, we don’t always think of these issues, but we should. Low-quality water is a global problem that is affecting us in different ways. We drink, shower, cook, and play using water!

This problem cannot be solved easily as many different factors including, flow, temperature, PH, salinity, organic contamination, and more, make up the quality of water. Some of these factors are familiar however, others are less frequently discussed. The unfortunate thing here is that you never know too much about something so important - turbidity.

So, what is Turbidity?

Turbidity is the measurement of the haziness of water. The cloudiness comes from suspended particles like minerals, proteins, algae, dirt, oils, or even bacteria. Turbidity is measured by using instruments like Sigrist Aquascat. Here a beam of light is passed through a sample to find the concentration of the suspended particles. The more the particles in the solution, the higher is its turbidity.

Importance of measuring Turbidity using a Turbidity instrument:

The first thing we observe about water is how clear it is. After all, no one wants to drink cloudy water! Turbidity is a standard water quality parameter across all environments, from environmental monitoring to the purity of drinking water. The suspended particles in water can reduce the effectiveness of disinfecting chemicals used in the treatment process. It can also act as carriers for parasites and bacteria.

The ultimate goal of drinking water treatment is to eliminate or reduce turbidity. During the treatment process, turbidity is measured at different stages with turbidity instruments to ensure treatment efficiency.

On the other hand, turbidity has extensive importance in environmental monitoring, where the haziness of water can indicate pollution. For instance, after a storm event, the runoff from construction and agriculture sites can rapidly flood natural waters with sediments. This can be harmful to the aquatic life that dwells in the water body. So by measuring turbidity levels, appropriate treatment can be determined.

In addition to measuring turbidity in water treatment and environmental monitoring, it is useful in breweries and other places across the food and beverage industries.

Effect of Turbidity on Human Health:

Firstly, as already discussed, we want only clear water to drink, bath, etc. High turbidity in drinking water is aesthetically unpleasant due to the cloudiness. However, it doesn’t end here; cloudiness in water may also indicate the presence of harmful bacteria, pathogens, heavy metals and many other toxic organic compounds. These represent health concerns as the risk is high for people to develop gastrointestinal problems. If not treated appropriately, the pathogens in drinking water can even lead to waterborne diseases.

This is why equipment like Sigrist Turbidity Meter is used in water treatment plants.
