The liquid forms of drilling fluids are commonly known as drilling mud. All drilling fluids, particularly the drilling mud, can have an extensive variety of chemical and physical properties. These properties are particularly intended for drilling conditions and the exceptional issues that must be taken care of in boring a well.
Purpose of using the Drilling Fluids
The drilling fluids provides following benefits:
1. Lubrication and cooling: As the bit drills into the formation of rock, the friction brought on by the pivoting bit against the rock produce heat. The heat is then scattered by the flowing penetrating liquid. The liquid likewise greases up the bit.
2.Control pressure: The boring mud can be the first line of safeguard against a victory or loss of well control brought about by formation pressures.
3.Suspend cuttings: There are times when flow must be ceased. The drilling liquid must have that gelling quality that will keep drill cuttings from settling down at the bit. This may created the drill channel to be trapped.
Because of the conditions and situations that occur after starting the drilling process, numbers of drilling issues occur and some of them occur because the drilling fluids are not intended to that particular work.
Fortunately, some of these issues can easily solved by just adding the additional materials to the fluid that adjust its chemical properties. In this regard, the most common change that has been done is the mud density or weight. However when formations of high pressure are expected, weighting material is added into the drilling fluid.
The density or weight of mud is one of the most crucial properties of mud in drilling process because it controls and balances the formation pressure and also assist stability of wellbores. The unit in which the drilling mud weight is measures is pounds per gallon (PPG) or gram per milliliter (b/ml) or pound per cubic feet (lb/cu.ft).
However the drilling mud density is accurately measured with a pressurized mud balance yet has a pressurized sample cup. Here we discuss some of the situations associated with the mud density and weight.
If weight of drilling mud is too high
Following issues will occur, if the weight of drilling mud is too high:
• Reduce drilling rate: The higher mud density you have at the time of drilling, the less drilling rate will be. Basically, at the beginning of drilling, low weight of mud is used and as the well penetrate deeper, the weight will be increased to optimize the rate of penetration.
• Formation damage: The higher weight of mud is in the well, the more filtration of mud penetrates into porous formations. The penetrated mud will damage the rocks formation.
If there is not enough fluid density
• Wellbore instability: If the hydrostatic pressure given by the column of mud is less than the formation pressure, then wellbore is possibly become unstable in this case.
• Well control: The well will be in an under parity condition so any arrangement liquids - gas, oil, and water- will enter into the wellbore.
