Ultimately all employees want their referral to be hired, irrespective of whether they have done the screening required to ensure the candidate fits the job requirement. Many employees end up referring simply because someone has asked them to refer and this kind of attitude defeats the very purpose of employee referral programs which is to hire the best candidate for the role. Referring a candidate without understanding the job requisition results in wastage of time and resources as the recruiting team is unnecessarily burdened with going through poor quality or irrelevant profiles of referral candidates.
The importance of understanding the job requisition before referring a candidate cannot be over emphasized as that is the only objective criteria to determine fitment of a candidate to a job role. Any job requisition typically includes a summary of the job responsibilities for the position, key selection criteria as educational qualifications and experience required. With the role clearly mapped out in terms of skills, qualification and experience required, employees can easily map their connections for the profile closest in proximity to the job requirements.
The ripple effects of a bad referral can be many which is why it is best to ensure you understand the job requisition before choosing to refer someone rather than referring for the sake of referring.
An incorrect or incomplete understanding of the job requisition can lead to wrong referral which in turn diminishes your status as a good referrer.
• A poor referral can mean that recruiters will stop taking your referrals seriously and diminish chances of your referral getting hired in future as well, not to mention wasted time and effort on your part in referring someone. Wrong referrals also spoil your relationship with the referred candidate in case you have proactively approached him regarding the job opening to him since he has applied trusting your judgment.
• Once people come to know that an employee’s referral is not valued in the organization, his or her connections will simply start bypassing him and approaching other connections within the organization either for a referral request or even if they simply want to know more about the organization. An employee does not only lose the chance to earn a fat referral bonus, he also loses credibility among his peers and social connections
• Referred employees tend to stick to employees who have referred them leading to greater bonding and team work among them. By not understanding the job requirement and referring the wrong candidate, the employee loses the chance to form strong associations within his current team based on past association.
The first and most important step in any hiring and selection process is the job requisition or job description, getting the job description right makes the process easier and smoother for all stakeholders including hiring managers and candidates.
