There are many reasons why the iPhone 4 is a special handset, and the fact that it has sold in such great volume illustrates this, the screen however is undeniably streets ahead of the competition, producing image quality that should not be possible on a portable device.
There are many reasons why you may consider purchasing the new iPhone 4 in a white finish. As far as styling goes the iPhone is unrivaled in the looks department. In addition to this there are the excellent audio facilities with great playback options and use of the renowned iTunes service. There is one area however where this model stands head and shoulders above its competition and that is with regards to the faultless screen the model employs.

When the transition between iPhone 3S and iPhone 4 was made the jump in quality of the screen was one of the key reasons why many people opted to upgrade. This new display is known as the Retina display as what the phone can actually show exceeds what your own eye can detect, thus it really does take things to the limit with regards to both picture and graphics quality. When we take a look at the more technical aspects of the screen, the thing that immediately stands out is the resolution, which at 640 x 960 betters every rival handset currently available. If we break this resolution down into a pixels per square inch rating, the result is a massive 326 and it is this density that enables words to look more akin to the printed page rather than a mobile display. To put this into perspective, the screen on the 3GS, which until this release was regarded as one of the best, offered a rating of 163 ppi. Part of the reason why so many of these tiny pixels can be fitted into such a small space is thanks to Apples developers who have managed to produce a pixel that measures just 78 micrometers wide. Another area where the screen excels is when you zoom in on areas of text. Whereas this would subsequently lead to a drop in quality on other phones, this model maintains the original standard of the image, complete with smooth edges and great detail.

Another important element of the screen found on the White iPhone 4 is its incorporation of IPS technology. IPS stands for In Plane Switching, and was developed by Hitachi in 1996. The idea behind it was to improve viewing angles on LCD screens. This is obviously important for portable devices such as this phone, and perhaps more so on units such as the iPad, where material is viewed from all manner of different angles. It is only recently that IPS has started to become more common, as initially costs were high which had a negative effect on adoption rates for the technology. The end result here is a display that offers 178 degree viewing angles, and quite why anybody would require more than this is a mystery. The glass used in the construction of the screen has been chemically toughened, giving this phone great durability alongside its obviously excellent technical specification.

There are many reasons why the iPhone 4 is a special handset, and the fact that it has sold in such great volume illustrates this, the screen however is undeniably streets ahead of the competition, producing image quality that should not be possible on a portable device.
