The system provides up to 208 spectators on a 30 meter high IMAX Dome screen space. The world's first 3D-Ride, "Race for Atlantis," was in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas opened.

The improved system "IMAX film Ride" was directed by Douglas Trumbull developed. It works with a horizontal current 35-mm film in Vista Vision image format that is played with 48 frames per second on a curved screen. Every 18 people can sit in the moving simulator capsule.

In Europe there are currently only available in France and Belgium four cinemas in the Gaumont Group, offering IMAX Rides: in the French towns Archamps, Labege and Valenciennes and Antwerp in Belgium. Furthermore, there's an IMAX cinema in the Ride- Phantasialand in Bruehl near Cologne, which is a 2D version of "Race for Atlantis." This has two screens, which make up each half of the dome.

IMAX Magic Carpet

In this technique, the film is shot with two cameras, with one forward and one facing down. The projection of the film is looking forward normally. The film is directed downward by a second shot, under the auditorium projector via a mirror located on the horizontal, "lying" screen (that's why Magic Carpet projected = "magic carpet") under (!) the rows of seats. This must logically be fitted with glass shelves. For example, aerial photographs are shown, where the audience has not only the view forward, but can also see the landscape below them. The two previously single "IMAX Magic Carpet" films were Flowers in the Sky , which showed the long journey of the Monarch butterflies, and "Flying Raft".

This method was able to prevail, however, since the viewers are accustomed to seeing in the cinema, and so the forward mitbekamen not "Magic Carpet" effect. In addition, the view down through your legs and the chair of the front man is severely limited.

Currently there is only one "IMAX Magic Carpet" cinema. It is located in the Futuroscope in Poitiers . There is also a "non-IMAX movie theater," which uses a very similar technique, however, the young woman park in Interlaken (Switzerland).
