Hunting A New Demographic

Watching movies and television shows in three dimensions was thought of as nearly impossible no more than a handful of short years ago, but all of a sudden it's practically ubiquitous, and a growing range of people are luxuriating in 3D from the warmth of their own homes. As 3D televisions become more popular, so also does the number of shows and events shot in three dimensions.

Of late a taste for 3D has been developing in the arts world. Giselle 3D, a ballet captured in Russia in three dimensions is only the most recent in a wave of performances that also includes Bizet's Carmen, which was shot at the Royal Opera House.

In the UK, we have one of the few dedicated 3D channels in the world in the form of Sky 3D, and in addition to Sky Arts these shows seem to have found a natural home. Carmen was shown on Sky Arts a couple of months ago and garnered rave reviews.

A reason behind why the arts have been so keen to experiment with 3D is that it is able to bring in a different demographic. Most brand new technologies are championed by the quite young, and the demographic who have bought three dimensional televisions to date are not the usual type of demographic you might tie to ballet or opera. At the same time, the broadcasters and companies who make 3D products are hoping that this broadly different type of shows will pull a new demographic to 3D.

There is no doubt that the ballet in 3D is particularly amazing, special attention has been paid to guarantee that the performance remains natural, even with the constraints of being required to pull out the finest angles for filming. The whole thing is a mind-blowing piece of work, and undoubtedly shows ballet in a thoroughly new light, particularly for filmed performances.

Although critics of 3D remain, the entertainment industry is fond of it, not simply due to the fact that it's a new and interesting medium, but due to the fact that it's so much more difficult to pirate. At present though, platforms for 3D television programmes are a little thinly spread, and if you want to enjoy the finest of the arts world in three dimensions there's no choice but to log on to the Sky shop at sky.com and buy yourself an arts package.
