There are many reasons why you might want to switch your broadband or mobile provider. You might be unhappy with the quality or reliability of your connection, annoyed with their policies, or you might just think that you can get a better deal elsewhere. Before you call them up to give them their marching orders, it is important to check the terms of your contract to find out whether you are allowed to break it after a certain point, and just when that point is.
If you are on a monthly contract, as opposed to a pre paid agreement, then you will probably have to pay a contract termination fee to get out of it, unless they have broken the terms of the contract in some way.
Find out what is out there in the way of deals and special offers from the other companies, as you might be better staying put.
One of your main concerns when choosing a new mobile service provider is the strength of signal that they can provide in your area. This is particularly important if you are looking to get mobile broadband or 3G services, as these need a strong signal if they are to be at all usable. Although the approximate signal strength in your area can be found out using the providers online location search, these are based on estimates rather than measurements, so you may want to ask your neighbours what services they use, and how good a reception they are getting.
When you have sorted out which network is best for you, then it is time to cancel your old contract. If you are switching broadband provider, you will need to get a MAC code from your old provider. Mobile users should ask for a PAC code, although this is not always necessary.
The only reason you need a PAC number is if you want to hang on to your old phone when you switch network. You will, however, need your MAC number if you are going to be able to switch your broadband provider, so make sure that you get it.
Broadband providers are legally obliged to give you your MAC code within five working days of the initial request. If they take any longer than this, let them know that you will be reporting your case to Ofcom, the industry regulator, and this should hurry things along. If it doesnt, then you should follow through with your threat to report them.
Once you have given your code to your new provider, the switchover should take no more than two days. If your old provider fails to authorise the switch within this time, then you should complain to Ofcom, or at least threaten to
