A leaky roof is something you should fix as quickly as possible. For small leaks in residential home roofs, it's possible to do the repair without calling in a contractor. If you are planning to carry out the repairing process all by yourself, then make sure you are prepared with the following tools:
- Hammer
- Safety goggles
- Roof cement
- Propane torch
- Knife
- Roofing nails
- Trowel
- Cleaning rags
The first thing to look for is the area that's causing the leakage. It should be easy to locate the leaky spot, as it will be marked by deeply patched and broken locations in the tar and felt that make up a flat roof. Once you have located the spot, wipe it, dry with a clean rag and remove any gravel or dirt.
Then, check if the top layer of the roof is damaged or blistered. When you have located the damaged area, you can then begin the process of mending the blistered roof:
1: Slice open the blister surface with a sharp knife until you've cut all the way through. Take care not to cut the roof layers that are unaffected.
2: Pop out the blistered layer and squeeze out every drop of water from it and leave it out for some time to dry. Wet season makes the layers to soak the water completely. You can make use of propane torch to dry out the area but make sure that you are wearing the protective goggles. Be cautious with the roofing felt and the tar paper as these are flammable.
3: After the above process, apply a good quantity of cement under the edges of the felt and settle it down. Press across corners tightly with the blistered layers.
4: Then finally, secure the edges with galvanized nails and coat it with a dollop of cement.
These are the steps to fix a small flat roof leak by yourself. However, for larger leaks and more complex flat roof systems such as TPO roofing on a commercial building, you should hire the services of a professional contractor - they will have both the necessary equipment and the experience with large-scale roof repair and replacement. If you are looking for the best contractor to do commercial flat roof leak repair in CT, consider hiring the services of Eagle Rivet Roof Service Corporation.
