The most difficult aspect of administering an employee referral program is to get employees to refer on a consistent basis. Very often employee referrals happen randomly with periods when employees forget completely about the referral program, leave alone participating in it. Also in most cases referrals are initiated by the candidate rather than the employee, which means they are not necessarily the best talent available in his or her connections to fill a particular job opening.
In order to be successful, referring others needs to become a habit with employees, and for this to happen referrals need to become ingrained into the company culture. This can happen only through repeated iteration over a period of time. In the meanwhile there are some steps that you can take to make employee referrals a habit in your organization.
Create a recurring calendar invite around employee referrals; the frequency depends on the stage at which employee referrals are in your organization. For instance if the employee referral program is still at a very nascent stage in your organization, it would be a good idea to send out a weekly recurring invite to keep people constantly reminded about sharing open positions and actively seeking out good candidates for referring. Make sure the subject matter of the invite is clear and concise enough to remind employee of the purpose of the invite, which is to refer. A calendar invite serves as a great way to remind employees that the organization is looking for their contribution and spending time seeking referral candidates is part of the job expectation.
Another newly discovered great way to develop referring into a habit is to introduce gamification into your referral program. Games, by their very nature are habit forming to the extent of becoming obsessive in some cases. Gamers are encouraged to keep coming back to play through status updates, friendly reminders, addition of new features, but mostly for the sake of getting the better of their opponents. The competitive element runs high in games which is the pull factor to keep people coming back to give it one more shot. Also gratification through reward points and bonuses etc keeps players motivated. By benchmarking employees against one another on their referral success, it is possible to bring in the game elements into the referral program to make playing the referral game a habit with employees. Many organizations have already started using it and are seeing positive results with the introduction of game elements in the employee referral program.
Since hiring is not a one- time activity, referring also needs to happen consistently which means employees need to keep participating. The above tips should help you get employees into the habit of referring on a regular basis.
