Basements and cellars are very useful locations for a house. It is an excellent place to store food as the temperatures is very stable below the ground level. But humid is the main problem associated with basements and cellars. Not only does the damp make the basements uncomfortable but it can also increase the growth of mildew. This is why damp proofing the basement through basement tanking is vital for all basements and cellars.
Basement tanking is more effective when done during construction – prevention is better than cure even when it comes to dampness. But at times even the waterproof protection on the outer walls can crack. Even if the drainage systems are close to the basement walls it will lead to the increase of dampness in the basement.
Humid can be controlled in the basements in various manners. One of them being dehumidifiers. It works by simply being set in the center of the room with the assistance of a fan to bring the air through it. It makes the air warm by its warming coils and keeps the room comfortable. Depending on the size of the room and the level of dampness in the room the dehumidifiers need to be dumped few times a day.
Drainage system is another simple solution to control dampness. This is helpful during rain and snow as it leads the water away from the soil close to the basement.
Drain tile is another common method used. It works by making a escape way for water which is draining around the basement. This is an effective way to keep the moisture out and stop the moisture from seeping in through any cracks in the floor or walls.
Caulk and coatings are the best known methods used to keep the dampness in the basements and cellars under control. They are easy to apply with rollers or brushes; it seals the concrete from inside. It can also be used to seal the joint where the wall meets the floor, which helps prevent moisture from entering the basement. Caulking can be used to close any small cracks to ensure that moisture is kept out of basements.
