Dental hygiene is something which many of us do our best to maintain by brushing our teeth regularly and going for annual check-ups at the dentist. The thoughts of tooth decay, fillings or needing false teeth in later life are all there to spur us on and keep our teeth and mouths clean and hygienic. But, if you want to ensure those teeth and gums stay healthy, there are more ways than just brushing your teeth. Some people swear by flossing or even oral irrigation, passing water around the gums and teeth, whilst some recommend massaging the gums with a toothbrush as part of the whole tooth-brushing routine. Are there other ways of ensuring good dental health, perhaps by preventing the bacterial attacks on our teeth in the first place?
One of the more popular ways of achieving this is by ensuring that what you eat and drink isn't just good for your figure, it's also god for your mouth. Our parents have doubtless nagged us throughout our childhood about the dangers of eating too many hard, sugary sweets which will make all our teeth fall out; over time, they are indeed right to be concerned. But sugar is only one of the things to keep in mind when thinking how best to look after your teeth.
Teeth are made of enamel, a mineral structure similar to that of our bones, and are particularly susceptible to acid. Fluoride in toothpaste is very good for our teeth because it makes the outside of them more resistant to acid, the scrubbing is what actually physically gets the bacteria off our teeth, so drinking large amounts of very acidic things, like cider or concentrated orange juice, will be not great for our teeth. Of course, a little orange juice is fine, indeed beneficial, as it contains vitamin C which is needed to maintain healthy gum structure; however obtaining vitamin C from less acidic fruits would be the ideal scenario. Vitamin D and calcium are of vital importance to teeth, calcium is one of the main minerals which makes up the structure of tooth enamel, so drinking milk is also a good idea.
A variety of other, perhaps less immediately obvious, foods have also been shown to be useful for keeping teeth and gums clean and healthy. Although raw onions may not seem that appealing, especially for the smell of one's breath, it turns out that they contain chemicals which are very good at killing many of the bacteria found on our teeth. Green tea contains a relatively high amount of fluoride and so is very good for all-round protection of teeth and gums, sesame seeds contain lots of calcium and so will help maintain strong, healthy teeth. The chewing of celery is excellent for indirectly massaging gums and it causes the production of lots of saliva, itself useful for neutralising acid in the mouth and protecting teeth.
Overall, apart form a good twice-daily scrub, paying some attention to what we eat and drink could be far more beneficial to our dental health than ever thought before, so next time you're out for a meal, don't just treat your taste buds, treat your teeth too!
