Maintaining an online blog or writing any extensive amount of work can leave you drained and your creativity sapped. Starting out, you can crank out ideas and work in a snap, but over time you start to slow down until you just stop altogether. So what can you do to combat writer's block when it hits? When your company is counting on you, you can't take a break that stretches on for months to replenish yourself. It might take a little effort, but with these tips, you'll be able to continue writing quality content for your company.

Look for inspiration and open your mind to it. Often, people say not to look for inspiration, that it will come to you. While that's fine to do when you're writing for your own benefit, when it comes to sustaining an income, you have to seek it out. Inspiration can be derived from many forms - by reading, looking at art, listening to music, browsing the Internet or old notes, and re-reading your old work. You can also develop ideas by talking to other writers about their work - and about your work too. You'd be surprised how often you come up with new ideas just by communicating with others in the field. Inspiration is everywhere, and sometimes all you have to do is open your mind to what's going on around you to absorb it.

Learn something new. Sometimes, inspiration has been driven away because we've exhausted all our resources and knowledge. One of the best ways to replenish it is to take the time to learn a new skill or seek out additional information about a topic. Research or spend time learning how to do something, so you can share your findings and your experience with others.

Give yourself a challenge. A challenge can be related to learning something new, but it can also be related to prompting yourself and filling the prompts in a limited amount of time. Think of a topic, such as graphic design, and come up with keywords related to that industry (such as typography). You can make yourself write five short paragraphs about typography - just write whatever comes to mind - and then go back over it to see if you can use any of the material or have additional ideas. Challenging yourself to write about something stream of consciousness will also help you get the ideas out.

Sleep on it. If you find yourself still struggling, you might just need a break and some rest. Before you go to bed, write down a list of goals you want to accomplish the next day and spend a few minutes thinking about it. Keep a notebook by your bedside so if you have your "eureka" moment when you first wake up, you can write it down quickly before you forget. Dreams can also be inspiring, so keeping a short dream log won't hurt either.

Just do it. When you've tried everything else and nothing's working, you may just need to sit down and force yourself to write. There are times that your writer's block is caused by getting stuck and not knowing where to go next, or by just not wanting to do it. I have participated in National November Writing Month for two years in a row now, and having to write 50,000 words in a single month can really stretch you thin. Writers participating in this challenge will get stuck but the advice is generally the same - once you reach that point, just keep going. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece at first; the important thing is to get it down, and you can polish it to near perfection later.

Writer's block is not an easy thing to overcome, and you may find yourself out of ideas for months at a time. However, eventually the inspiration will come back and you can get back into the swing of things like you did at the beginning. It's a part of every writer's cycle that you must learn to handle.
